Former India opener, Kris Srikkanth believes Rohit Sharma should open the innings for the Mumbai Indians. However, the reigning champions skipper is generally batting at the number four position in this IPL 2018.

Rohit Sharma is Mumbai Indians’ best batsman, and it makes all the sense to make him bat at the top of the order.

A particular team has the maximum chance of winning the match if its best batter faces the maximum number of balls.

Rohit had himself change and chopped his batting position which is a bit surprising. Suryakumar Yadav and Evin Lewis have opened the innings for Mumbai Indians.

Rohit is Mumbai’s best batsman and thus should face maximum balls.

Kris Srikkanth wrote in his TOI column that Mumbai is slowly getting into their groove. The former Indian captain wrote,

“It has been heartening to see Mumbai settle in with the right combination. They have been covering all bases in their last few games; however, the only area where I feel they could do better is Rohit Sharma needs to open the innings.”

Srikkanth added the best batsman in the team should be given a chance to face maximum deliveries.

“It goes without saying that the best batsman in the side should be allowed to face maximum deliveries. For an opener with such an outstanding record in white ball cricket, I can’t really see a reason why Rohit refuses to open in the IPL. Eden Gardens is one of his happy hunting grounds, and I would like to see the skipper open the innings,” Srikkanth said.

Mumbai cannot afford any more hiccups.

Srikkanth further said Kolkata Knight Riders could have one more poor match, whereas, Mumbai Indians cannot afford any more hiccups.

“There has been very little to choose between Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders this season. The only thing going for Kolkata this evening will be the fact that they can live another day even if they end up second best. For Mumbai, every game from here is a knockout, and this clutch situation can be a double-edged sword at times,” Srikkanth further penned down.

Mumbai have had their issues with the middle order performance.  Hence, Rohit Sharma had pushed himself at the number four position.

Rohit is instrumental in the success of the Mumbai Indians, and it would be interesting to note his batting place against Kolkata.

It will be justifiable if he comes to bat at the top of the order. Mumbai will take on Kolkata on Wednesday at latter’s home ground of Eden Gardens.
