It was a special knock from Shane Watson, as Chennai Super Kings registered their 3rd Vivo IPL victory by defeating the Sunrisers Hyderabad by eight wickets at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Chennai Super Kings performed quite admirably throughout the group stages fixtures and on the big day; it was a Shane Watson special which sealed the deal for the Chennai Super Kings. Courtesy of their victory, Chennai becomes the most successful team in the tournament with three titles along with Mumbai Indians.

Early in the day, it was MS Dhoni who won the toss and asked Hyderabad to bat. Shreevats Goswami got dismissed quite early.

However, there was a good partnership between Shikhar Dhawan and Kane Williamson. Both played some good shots before Dhawan was castled by Ravindra Jadeja in his very 1st over.  Williamson also got dismissed at the stroke of a half-century. Karn Sharma lured him to the drive with a flighted delivery. In the end, he missed it completely, and Dhoni whipped off the bails in a flash.

From there on it was good hitting by Yusuf Pathan and Carlos Brathwaite which propelled Hyderabad to a challenging total of 178 runs in their allotted 20 overs. Yusuf smashed a quickfire 45 which included four fours and a couple of sixes. Brathwaite also smashed three sixes en route to his 21 off 11 deliveries.

With the bat in hand, Watson was at his imperious best, as he smashed his 2nd century of the season.

Sensational hitting by Watson

He literally toyed with the Hyderabad bowling line-up and smashed them to all parts of Wankhede. It was the old vintage Watson at the display, as he tore through the best bowling line-up with the competition.

With his lower back not working properly, it was just standing and deliver for Watson which he did in style. They chased off the target in the penultimate over to become the champions after returning to the competition after a gap of three years.

Tweet from Hayden

Following their victory, former Chennai Super Kings player and a current commentator of Star Sports, Mathew Hayden congratulated his former team on a brilliant victory.

He also hailed the knock of a terrific player Shane Waston.

“Very very special performance @ChennaiIPL @ShaneRWatson33 take a bow mate…#crushedit God Bless you all as our beloved festival of @IPL comes to a conclusion. Love you India,” Hayden said.
