IPL 2018: All You Need to Know About the Ownership of Eight Franchises

The much-coveted Indian Premier League (IPL), which commenced in the year of 2008 have had simultaneously earned many accolades over the years following its burgeoning success.

However, owning an IPL team requires a huge investment and a passion for cricket. Moreover, it requires a lot of dedication a dependable group responsible for managing an entire squad.

The owners also actively involved with the talent scouting and coaching staff before zeroing on players in the auction every year. It is also crucial that the owner trusts his advising committee completely when it comes to investing in unknown players.

The owners also need to keep a positive mindset even when their teams don’t do well.

It’s imperative that the players get the backing of their owners all the time. A good team owner always keeps an open mind while taking decisions, which are best in their team’s interest.

Let us take a look at the eight franchise owners:

Chennai Super Kings:

India Cements is the primary stakeholder in the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) team. Former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President N. Srinivasan owns the company and is the main man behind Chennai set up.

Meanwhile, Super Kings are the most successful team in the history of IPL. They have qualified for the playoffs in all the seasons so far and has won the coveted trophy twice.

Led by Mahendra Singh Dhoni, they made a perfect start to this league with six wins from nine games.

Kolkata Knight Riders:

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan owns this franchise along with Juhi Chawla and her husband Jay Mehta. While Shah Rukh’s company Red Chillies Entertainment has 50 percent stake in the team, Juhi and Jay share the rest 50 percent.

Meanwhile, Jay is the owner of a Mauritius-based company called The Sealand Investment Ltd which own 15 percent of its share.

The official slogan of the team is the catchy “Korbo, Lorbo, Jeetbo” (we will act, fight and win!) and KKR, in general, has an extremely strong brand value.

Mumbai Indians:

Mumbai Indians is owned by Reliance Industries through its subsidiary company Indiawin Sports Private Ltd. Moreover, they have 50 percent hold in the company and the rest is shared among other three companies.

The other three portion includes Shinano Industrial Retail, Teesta Retail, and few individuals.

Mumbai led by Rohit Sharma had a poor start to this edition, however, is giving a hint to turn things in their favour.

Royal Challengers Bangalore:

United Breweries Private Ltd and Navaneeth Vasudevan share the stakes in the RCB franchise by an equal margin.

However, previously, Vijaya Mallya’s company UB Group owned the company fully.

They have a strong set-up with both players and supports staffs, however, is yet to taste success in the league.

Meanwhile, they had a poor start to this ongoing season and will change their fate.

Sunrisers Hyderabad:

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) is owned by Kalanithi Maran and Sharan Mansukhani. Maran, owner of the Sun TV holds 90 percent of the shareholders while Sharan owns 10 percent.

The former Australian cricketer Tom Moody is the head coach of the side, who has had a good start to this season.

Moreover, they have VVS Laxman and Muttiah Muralitharan in their set-up which makes it even more interesting.

Under the leadership of Kane Williamson, Hyderabad looks like a serious title contender.

Kings XI Punjab:

K.P.H Dream Cricket Private Ltd is the owner of the Kings XI Punjab franchise.

Meanwhile, there are seven stakeholders in total in that company.

Bollywood actress Preity Zinta, Wadia Group‘s Ness Wadia, MB Finmart, Windy Investment, Root Investment Private Ltd, and Colby Investment Ltd are the seven stakeholders.

Preity Zinta, however, is the face of the team. She is normally seen in every KXIP game vociferously cheering for her players from the stands.

Meanwhile, they have had a good start to this tournament and is one of the possible contenders to qualify for the playoffs.

Delhi Daredevils:

The GMR Group purchased the Delhi franchise in 2008. Mr. G.M Rao owns the infrastructural company GMR Group, headquartered in Bangalore. Their home ground is the Feroz Shah Kotla Ground in Delhi.

Kiran Grandhi, son of G M Rao, has been a regular feature at the team’s matches and is usually seen quietly supporting them from the stands.

However, Delhi is languishing at wrong half of the table, however, they have still chances to qualify.

Rajasthan Royals:

The franchise is currently owned and chaired by Manoj Badale. Other investors include Lachlan Murdoch, Aditya S Chellaram, and Suresh Chellaram.

The Group acquired the franchise for $67million. Incidentally, this was the least expensive franchise in the IPL and probably the least fancied team in the league at the beginning of the tournament.

However, they have come back to the tournament after two years of suspension.

Shane Warne is the mentor of the side, well-assisted by domestic stalwarts.

Moreover, they have had a mixed start to this IPL season with an equal number of wins and losses. They need to up their game to seal a place in the top four.
