Delhi Daredevils dealt a big blow to Chennai Super Kings’ top-two hopes by beating them by 34 runs at the Feroz Shah Kotla on Friday.

Chasing a modest 163, Shane Watson and Ambati Rayudu started the proceedings in a calm manner, not playing the big shots early on. They added 46 runs for the first wicket to set the tone for the chase. Amit Mishra broke the stand by sending back Watson for 14 who took 23 balls to score those runs.

In-form Ambati Rayudu went on to complete his fifty off 28 balls but was out on the very next delivery. At the end of the tenth over, Super Kings were 70 for 2. Runs were not coming and Super Kings found themselves in further trouble after Sandeep Lamichhane dismissed Suresh Raina to reduce them to 90 for 3. Amit Mishra then had Sam Billings for just 1 to leave the visitors in all sorts of trouble. At the end of the 15th over, the Super Kings were 94 for 4.

It looked all over for the Super Kings when Dhoni departed on the final ball of the 18th over. The visitors needed an improbable 50 from last two overs at that time. They were eventually restricted to 128 for 6.

That Super Kings had such a modest total to chase was mainly because of their bowlers’ disciplined show. MS Dhoni’s decision to bowl first was fully justified by his bowlers.  The two-time champions never allowed the Delhi batsmen to settle down, taking wickets at regular intervals to restrict them to a modest 162 for 5 in the allotted 20 overs.

Deepak Chahar gave the visitors the first breakthrough by dismissing Prithvi Shaw for just 17. Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant then added 54 runs for the second to lay the foundation for a good total. However, Lungi Ngidi dismissed both the batsmen inside an over to reduce the hosts to 81 for 3 from 78 for 1. They soon found themselves reeling at 97 for 5.

At that time, the 150-run mark looked like a distant dream. However, they managed to cross the 150-run mark only because of Vijay Shankar and Harshal Patel’s unbeaten knocks. The duo stitched an unbeaten stand of 65 runs to help the Daredevils post a respectable total. Vijay Shankar scored 36 off 28 balls while Patel scored as many off just 16 balls.
