Mumbai Indians held their nerves in the final over to win their fourth Indian Premier League title as they beat Chennai Super Kings by one run at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.

Mumbai wins it for the fourth time

Chasing a modest total, Faf du Plessis gave Chennai Super Kings a perfect start. He took on Krunal Pandya and Lasith Malinga scoring 26 runs off 13 balls before Quinton de Kock stumped the South Africa skipper to have Chennai at 36 for one. Since then, Shane Watson and Suresh Raina added 37 runs before Rahul Chahar got the better of Raina (8). Mumbai Indians used the momentum to snick in two more wickets to have 82 for four with MS Dhoni’s runout being the game-changing moment.

With 62 needed off the last five overs, Lasith Malinga shelled 20 runs in the 16th over to change the course of the game. Watson who has been lucky throughout the game started to take on the bowlers and eventually brought his half-century. He then took Krunal Pandya for another 20-run over to bring down the equation to 18 runs from 12 balls. But two outstanding over from Jasprit Bumrah and Lasith Malinga won it for the Mumbai as they won the match by one run.

Chennai spinners lead the charge

Batting first, Mumbai Indians could manage to post only 149 runs after a flying start. Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock took things off the blokes after winning the toss and electing to bat first. They added 45 runs off just 4.1 overs before a quick bouncer from Shardul Thakur got the top edge off de Kock to MS Dhoni. The departure of the South Africa wicket-keeper produced another wicket as a brilliant knuckleball from Deepak Chahar undid Rohit Sharma.
