Delhi Capitals’ winning start in IPL 2020 came to an end on Tuesday with a 15-run defeat at the hands of Sunrisers Hyderabad. And following the defeat, Delhi Capitals captain Shreyas Iyer suffered another blow as he was fined for slow over-rate.
The Delhi-based franchise could not complete their quota of 20 overs in time. They took 23 minutes more to finish their 20 overs after starting on 6 pm local time. This was Delhi Capitals’ first over-rate offence in the ongoing IPL 2020. Consequently, Shreyas Iyer was fined INR 12 lakh.
“As it was his team’s first offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, Mr. Iyer was fined Rs 12 lakh,” the IPL said in a release.
Delhi Capitals, meanwhile, dropped to the second spot in the points table – behind Rajasthan Royals – after losing their first game. They will now play Kolkata Knight Riders on October 3 in Sharjah.
SRH register first win:
While Delhi Capitals lost their first game, it was the first win of the season for Sunrisers Hyderabad. Asked to bat first, the Hyderabad-based outfit posted 162 for 4 in the allotted 20 overs. Captain David Warner and Jonny Bairstow gave the team a good start by adding 77 runs for the first wicket before the former departed.
Bairstow went on to score a fifty before Kane Williamson slammed 41 from 26 to power the team to its highest total this season. Kagiso Rabada impressed with the ball again for Delhi as the South Africa star picked up two wickets while conceding just 21 runs off his four overs.
In reply, Delhi Capitals could only manage 147 for 7. Shikhar Dhawan was the top-scorer with 34 while spinner Rashid Khan made the difference with the ball, taking 3 for 14 off his four overs.
