Kolkata Knight Riders’ stunning two-run win over Kings XI Punjab on Saturday was marred by the injury to their star allrounder Andre Russell. The West Indies star injured himself while attempting to save a boundary.

During the second over of the KXIP chase, Andre Russell was chasing the ball and made a sliding dive in an attempt to stop the ball from crossing the rope. He failed to stop the boundary before going on to injure himself after crashing into the advertisement board.

He was eventually taken off and replaced by Australian Chris Green on the field. The fast-bowling allrounder was seen applying ice to his knee. In the eleventh over of the innings, he returned to the field but did not bowl and exited the field soon, much to the worry of the team-management.

Dinesh Karthik worried:

Following the game, KKR skipper Dinesh Karthik gave an update on Andre Russell. The wicketkeeper-batsman did not reveal the extent of the injury but his comments made it clear that the injury was a bit serious. Calling the allrounder a ‘very special player’, Karthik said things get hard for the side whenever he is injured.

“Whenever Russell gets injured, you know it is hard. He is a very special player, he is a very special person. We need to go and look at him,” said Karthik.

KKR will be hoping that the injury is not serious and their star man is available for the next clash. Andre Russell has been quite prone to injuries in his career so far. Last year, he was ruled out of the World Cup after suffering an injury during the initial stage of the tournament.

The right-handed batsman, nonetheless, is yet to deliver a big innings with the bat in IPL 2020. In six games so far, he has scored only 55 runs with 24 being the highest score.
