IPL 2020: Just Days Before Start Of Tournament, IPL Governing Council Upsets Franchises
Just few days ahead of the upcoming edition, the IPL governing council has miffed the franchises by deciding to halve the amount of money given to the four teams that reach the play-offs of the league. The thirteenth edition of the league gets underway on March 29 with defending champions Mumbai Indians taking on Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede Stadium.
But ahead of the season, the governing council and the franchises look set to be involved in a tussle over the former’s latest decision. In a unilateral decision, the IPL and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have decided that the four franchises in playoffs, which earlier shared Rs 50 crore between them, will now share Rs 25 crore.
According to Bangalore Mirror, a mail to this effect was sent to the franchises on Friday. Apart from this, the IPL also informed that each franchise would now have to pay Rs 50 lakh to the association for every game it hosts. Previously they had to pay only Rs 30 lakh. This increase of Rs 20 lakh per match means that each franchise will have to shell out Rs 1.4 crore more over the course of a season.
With the franchises earning more than Rs 200 crore a season from central revenue, Rs 1.4 crore may not seem like a big amount. However, the franchises are miffed over the fact that the IPL and the BCCI took the decision without even consulting them.
“Such things could have been told to us at a meeting. But there was no such meeting of the owners and they simply increased some fees and reduced others,” said an official from a south-based team.
In its mail, the BCCI also did not specify a reason for halving the play-off fee. It simply broke down the amount that each team will be receiving this year after making it to the playoffs.
