The upcoming season of the Indian Premier League is all set to have a new loan system for the players. A different version of the same system was in place last season too. Last year, the IPL governing council had made a provision for uncapped players to be loaned mid-season in the manner of football transfers. A five-day window was opened after the halfway stage for uncapped players to be loaned.

The condition for the loan was that the player should not have played more than two games. Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Mahela Jayawardene were some of the prominent names who had come out in support of the system. However, not a single franchise made use of the five-day mid-season window.

New system in place:

With the previous system not proving too popular among the franchises, the IPL governing council has come up with a new system. According to ESPNCricinfo, the upcoming edition will, for the first time, allow loans of capped players – Indian or overseas – between teams after the halfway point of the season. The temptation to loan in capped players might prompt the franchise to try out the new system.

The IPL has set the condition that the player needs to have played a maximum of two matches before the halfway mark (28 matches). The arrangement would be between the franchises and the money will be paid from outside the auction purse. The player will not benefit from the transfer, but the IPL would be notified about the transaction.

Meanwhile, the auction for the next season will take place in Kolkata on Thursday (December 19). A total of 338 players will go under the hammer for 73 available slots. Out of those 73 seats, only 29 seats are available for overseas players.
