IPL 2020: Viewership Surges By 30% In The First Week Of The Tournament

For plenty of reasons, the current edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) was going to garner plenty of views worldwide and much more than usual. With the COVID-19 pandemic forcing IPL to be postponed by more than three months, the fans were waiting for September. As revealed by official broadcast Star India, the viewership of the tournament has surged by 30 per cent.

The opening match of the 2020 IPL took place between Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians in Abu Dhabi where the former beat the Mumbai Indians by five wickets. It earned a record view of 158 million, claimed by Star India network. The regional markets have also gained by a substantial 39.4 % over the last year. Hence, the current edition of the extravaganza has created a massive impact.

Star Sports CEO Gautam Thakar feels delighted to deliver the biggest ever season of the cash-rich league. The CEO officially announced that the opening week of dream11 IPL 2020 has culminated in a staggering new viewership record with a zoom in 30 per cent from last year.

We are thrilled to deliver the biggest ever IPL. The opening week for Dream11 IPL 2020 resulted in a staggering new viewership record with an increase of 30% over last year,” Thakar stated as quoted by Hindustan Times.

Meanwhile, the 13th match of the 2020 edition of cash-rich league entails between Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab. Mumbai Indians have reached 191 in 20 overs, courtesy of the half-century at the top from Rohit Sharma followed by pyrotechnics from Hardik Pandya and Kieron Pollard. In pursuit of a steep chase, Kings XI Punjab are in a bit of bother, having lost three wickets inside ten overs.
