Out of favour Indian ace-spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin, in his bid to make a comeback into limited overs cricket recently revealed that he is planning to add leg-spin variations into his arsenal during the 2018 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
The IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore coach Daniel Vettori, during the ongoing St Moritz for the Ice Cricket tournament, backed Ashwin for his exciting experiment.
Ashwin also found support from former English international Monty Panesar to try out the new variation apart from the long list of ammunition already in his arsenal.
Vettori gave a go-ahead to Ashwin by praising his credentials in all formats of the game.
“Everything Ashwin does, he does well. He is a highly skilled bowler that’s the thing I like about this style of cricketers. He has variations, he is prepared to try things and he has done so well. His record speaks for itself in all formats and he will continue doing that,” claimed Daniel Vettori according to Hindustan Times.
Panesar, on the other hand, cited out the analyst in Ravichandran Ashwin who already holds an engineering degree.
Both Ashwin and Jadeja have failed to make the cut into the limited-overs for India looking at their high strike-rate, averages and economy since the World Cup of 2015, even though they are the first choice spinners in the longest format of the game.
“See, I studied maths, Ashwin studied engineering. He has got a very analytical and mathematical sort of mindset. Cricket is about angles, he is always going to look for those angles… and I am sure he is thinking probably leg-spin, carrom ball. Why, he has been so brilliant because he has got that sort of engineering mindset, which gives him a competitive advantage over other spinners,” quoted Monty Panesar who is also part of the Ice Cricket League in Switzerland.
“He is probably just working out things, and it will be interesting to see how leg-spin turns out. It’s brilliant that he is trying so much different variations. That’s something I should have done earlier when I was playing. It’s good to see how spin is evolving from a spinner’s point of view,” concluded Panesar.
