IPL: List Of Changes In Tournament Since Its Inception In 2008

The Indian Premier League (IPL), since its inception in 2008, has grew to become one of most-anticipated domestic T20 tournaments across the globe. Cricketers from across the continents have participated in the tournament in its span of 13 years and counting. The IPL has been studded with not just the entertaining brand of cricket but also behind the scene administrative decisions, the fun and the frolicks, off the field. But since its inception the lucrative tournament has seen some changes. As IPL turns a year older, we have a look at some of the key changes that the tournament has undergone, over the decade.

1. Lalit Modi banned for life

Lalit Modi, the architect of IPL, was banned by its parent body for life. The decision was taken at a special meeting of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for indiscipline and misconduct. The primary accusations against Lalit Modi began after the 2010 IPL bidding, which saw the creation of two new franchises. His act reportedly breached the agreements between the parent body and the participating franchises. He was suspended by the BCCI three years back in 2010 as the commissoner of the tournament. Modi was also accused of several other cases including, awarding contracts to his friends, accepting kickbacks on a broadcast deal, selling franchises to members of his family, betting and money laundring.

2. Chirayu Amin puts end to IPL night bashes

Chirayu Amin, after taking over from the dismissal of Lalit Modi, made a major change in the lucrative tourament. He said no to the IPL night parties, which was touted as the potential hub of match-fixing and corruption, and said the main focus should be on cricket. After the decision was implemented, franchises started to host private parties for the players and accompanients.

3. Vijay Mallya resigns from his position at RCB

Liquor baron Vijay Mallya resigned from his position as director of Royal Challengers Sports Private Limited, losing his control over the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), after he fled the country with outstanding debts of Rs. 9,000 crore. Diageo, a British alcohol company which has a majority stake in USL is managing the RCB team, his son Siddharth Mallya named as the new director.

4. IPL introduced Decision Review System (DRS)

The eleventh season of the IPL saw a major and substantial change as the decision review system (DRS) was introduced. Intially, each team was given one review, with the umpires having access to both ball tracking and ultra edge. Incidentally, the DRS was introduced in the PSL before the IPL.

 

5. Pakistan players banned from IPL participation

Following the terror attacks in Mumbai, the parent body of the IPL, took firm steps to ban Pakistan players from participating the tournament. A number of Pakistan players had featured in the inaugural edition but since the ties has been cut off between both the countries. PCB in response had also stopped the broadcast of the tournament in the country.
