The scheduling of cricket events has gone haywire due to the outbreak of novel coronavirus pandemic. The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 has been postponed indefinitely with uncertainty over the 2020 T20 World Cup prevailing. Amid all this, former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum has suggested that the IPL can take T20 World Cup’s slot in October with the marquee tournament postponed to next year.

Speculations about the scheduling of the tournaments is rife and nothing can be assured at this moment. The parent body of the lucrative tournament is also eyeing the July window for a closed door tournament but there is no hints about the IPL to be called-off as of now. It is primarily keeping in mind the loss the board and sponsors related to the tournament will suffer. BCCI has once again opted for the ‘wait and watch’ policy and continue to build on it.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) coach Brendon McCullum feels BCCI will be targeting the October slot for IPL and the T20 World Cup will be further postponed to next year. However, for that to happen a lot of things will have to be considered including the T20 World Cup, next year.

“I think the IPL will try and target that October window and the T20 World Cup will get pushed back,” McCullum, the coach of IPL side Kolkata Knight Riders, told ‘Sky Cricket Podcast’.

“That may mean the Women’s World Cup gets pushed back but hopefully we get to see all three tournaments operate.”

The pandemic has already claimed lives of over 180,000 people across the globe. The total cases have crossed over 2,000,000 and reports suggest continuous surge in the number of cases across the globe. For the sporting season to resume, it is important to contain the fatal virus, and situation to return to normal at first.
