For someone, who has seen the evolution of the game from Test cricket to T20s, Rahul Dravid remains a purist at heart, who would never endorse an IPL performance as being good enough to merit selection in the ODI and Test team. He confirms the same in the recent interview of ESPN Cricinfo citing that IPL performance will not make an impact on the selection of a player for the national team, especially for ODI and Test forms of the game.

Gone are those days when the selection of a player solely based on his performance in domestic cricket. Scores and wickets of the players in the domestic trophies are used to be the parameters for the players to make it to the national team. However, everything isn’t the same, as the Indian Premier League completely changed the system. Former India skipper Rahul Dravid recently expressed his opinion on the same.

Selectors put a lot of value on Domestic runs – Rahul Dravid

Speaking of the Test Cricket, the former cricketer of India Rahul Dravid quoted that the Indian Premier League has done a lot of good for the game of cricket. Still, he doesn’t want to consider the performance in IPL as the parameter for the national selection. He is happy that the selectors prefer the performances in domestic cricket rather than the IPL show.

Further, Rahul Dravid stated that MSK Prasad-led selection panel decided the selection of player based on his performance in domestic cricket. He also cited the examples of Prithvi Shaw and Shubman Gill, who not only performed in IPL but also scored brilliantly in domestic formats to make their way to international cricket.

”In the Twenty20 format, yes, maybe. But I think the selectors have also been very good, in the sense that they are expecting people to do well in the Ranji Trophy as well. So, whether it is a Shubman Gill or a Prithvi Shaw from the last batch who came in if you look at their performances, they have got into the Indian team not only based on their IPL runs, but really on their Ranji Trophy runs, their India A runs,” Rahul Dravid said.

”So, the selectors are not only looking at IPL performances. In the conversations and discussions I have with them, it becomes very clear to me that they have put a lot of value on domestic cricket, they have put a lot of value on domestic runs, India A runs. That is really good to see. If the selectors drive that, then people will understand that it’s important,” he added.
