The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) decided against including MS Dhoni in their central contract list for the ongoing season. Last week, the board announced the list of 27 players who earned the central contract list. MS Dhoni has not played any form of cricket for India or for his domestic team since the end of the World Cup in July.

Neither the team-management nor the BCCI has given any concrete update on MS Dhoni’s future. Recently, head coach Ravi Shastri tried to make things a bit clear by stating that MS Dhoni is likely to retire from ODIs soon but could be in contention to play the T20 World Cup if he does well in the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). But barring that, there is no clarity over the future of the former India skipper.

Virender Sehwag on MS Dhoni’s contract snub:

While the BCCI’s decision of not giving MS Dhoni a central contract might have left many surprised, former India opener Virender Sehwag is not one of them. The legendary batsman also said that there is also no confirmation that the selectors would recall MS Dhoni again. Not only that Virender Sehwag also said that the selectors’ decision to not include Dhoni in the grade list is correct.

“No. Not at all (on being asked if he is surprised by BCCI’s decision) because he hasn’t played any form of cricket since World Cup 2019 so no surprises here. He has retired from Tests, they don’t play him in one-days and there’s only one format left. It isn’t also confirmed whether they would play him again,” Virender Sehwag told Cricbuzz.

“Selectors have probably made up their mind that they will not select MS Dhoni. So BCCI also made its mind. The grades are created by selectors and they might have thought that since they will not pick Dhoni, it will be ideal to include him. It’s correct. It’s a clear message for MS that you can call it quits whenever you feel like,” he added.
