It’s Time For Selectors To Look Beyond MS Dhoni And Groom Youngsters – Gautam Gambhir
Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir likes to speak his mind across issues like cricket or politics. While the country is divided over MS Dhoni’s retirement, it has touched Gambhir as well. The former cricketer feels the selectors should look beyond Dhoni and groom the youngsters for the future.
The former India skipper’s silence on his retirement has made everyone speculate over his future decision. After a dismal run in the World Cup in England, MS Dhoni has made himself unavailable for the series against West Indies and South Africa. Reports suggest that he will not play against Bangladesh.
Popular perception says that the legendary cricketer will be in the scheme of things till the 2020 T20 World Cup in Australia. In the meantime, he is giving the management time to groom Rishabh Pant and his back-ups.
But Gautam Gambhir said that although taking a retirement call is an individual decision but MS Dhoni now look at the future. He also said that he doesn’t see the wicket-keeper batsman playing the next World Cup.
“I feel that retirement is a very individual decision. Till the time you want to play you are allowed to play, but you do have to look at the future as well. I do not see Dhoni playing the next World Cup,” Gambhir told Indian Express.
Gautam Gambhir feels the skipper and the selectors should have the courage and tell MS Dhoni that he is no more in the scheme of the things. The cricketer-turned-politician also said that no cricketer is bigger than the game. As a result, the selectors should take a call quickly considering that it is about the country.
‘So whoever is the captain (then), Virat or anyone else, should have the courage to say so, that this player is not fitting into the scheme of things. It’s time for some of the youngsters to get groomed in the next four-five years because ultimately it is not about Dhoni, it is about the country,” Gambhir added.

Furthermore, Gautam Gambhir expressed that the Indian team should focus on the young talent and groom them for the bright future. He also remarked the Dhoni’s time is up in the Indian team and players like Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson get a long run to prove their talent.
“It is not about Dhoni staying on for the next cricket World Cup, it is about winning the next cricket World Cup. You might want to give the opportunity to Rishabh Pant or Sanju Samson, any young cricketer… They should get the opportunity… I think personally if you ask me, I think it’s time for Indian cricket to look beyond Dhoni,” Gambhir co
