New Zealand cricketers must be hating the word super over now. In the last six months or so, super over has cost them a World Cup and two T20I series at home against England and India. On Wednesday, they lost the third T20I against India in the super over.

Tim Southee failed to defend 17 runs in one over against Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul. After conceding just 8 runs in the first four balls, Southee was hit by two sixes by Rohit Sharma as India snatched victory from the jaws of defeat to wrap up the series with two games remaining.

One cannot help but feel bad for the New Zealand players. But while almost everyone has sympathized with the New Zealand players, very few have spared a thought for the former Black Caps wicketkeeper-turned commentator Ian Smith. He was in the commentary box on all those three occasions when New Zealand lost in the super over.

Ian Smith has done an impeccable job behind the mic despite seeing his nation losing those three games. The veteran commentator managed to keep his emotions under check on all those three occasions. But on Wednesday, Ian Smith went on to say that he has lost some years of his life because of them.

“If this Super Over ends in a tie, I’m retired. I’ve lost my years of life (calling three super overs in just over six months), but I love it. I absolutely love it,” Smith said while commentating during the third T20I between India and New Zealand in Hamilton.

After the match ended, New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson also rued his team’s failure to cross the line in super overs. Known for his shy nature, Williamson did not shy away from expressing his disappointment after his 95-run knock went in vain.

“Super Overs aren’t really our friends. To be honest we would have liked to get across the line earlier and not in the Super Over. It’s just a shame that we couldn’t get past the line,” said a disappointed Williamson at the post-match press conference.

“It is pretty disappointing to be on the wrong side of the result after doing a lot of hard work. (But) There was a lot of improvement after the first two games,” Williamson added

The two sides meet again for the fourth T20I at Wellington on Friday.
