Jack Leach Suffers Concussion in his Comeback Match; Misses Rest of the Game

Somerset became only the 2^nd county ever who had to field a concussion substitute after left-arm spinner Jack Leach suffered a blow to his head which ruled him out of the remainder of the game against Surrey in Guildford.

Leach was making a comeback following a thumb injury. It had ruled him out of England’s Test series against Pakistan at home earlier. He further missed Somerset’s match against the Nottinghamshire.

Leach took a blow on his helmet from a rising delivery from the former South African speedster, Morne Morkel. It was during Somerset’s first innings when Leach was hit hard on the helmet. Despite the blow, he continued to bat. It might have made him a bit tense after getting hit.

Ryan Patel eventually dismissed him. He finished with stunning figures 6/5 in just 3.5 overs. It was a brilliant piece of bowling which forced Somerset to follow on. They were heading towards a big defeat when they were informed that Leach wouldn’t bat due to a concussion. Hence Max Waller came on to bat as a concussion substitute.

It was just on Thursday when Lancashire had opted for Danny Lamb, as the concussion replacement for Joe Mennie.

It was against their game against Worcestershire. Mennie was struck in the head as he tried to protect himself from getting hit from a straight hit from New Zealand opener Martin Guptill. He is a powerful striker of the ball, and one can understand what would happen if a player gets hit on his full-blooded shot.

Meanwhile, Leach will be eager to prove a point or two once he returns to the field. He will look to make himself available for the Test series against India.

However, it is not certain whether he gets the nod up or not. England doesn’t have a reliable spinner especially in Tests and Leach would like to believe that he is the solution.
