Jason Roy Earns Maiden Test Call-up As England Name Strong Squad For Historic Test Match Against Ireland

England’s World Cup 2019 star batsman Jason Roy is all set to make his Test debut in the history one-off Test against Ireland as he has been handed his maiden Test call-up for the upcoming Test match. He came into contention last year and has been rewarded soon after England’s maiden World Cup triumph.

He might be opening the innings with Rory Burns as Keaton Jennings has been dropped from the squad. Joe Denly could come in at number three followed by Joe Root.

England have rested few star players from the squad who were recently part of the team in the World Cup. Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer have ben rested. ECB’s media release confirms that Archer remains in contention for a place in the Test squad for Ashes. He is currently on a vacation to Barbados and will be returning soon.

Mark Wood, another member of England’s World Cup squad, is suffering from a side strain and is expected to miss a large part of Ashes 2019.

Amidst the news of James Anderson struggling with an injury, the veteran pacer has been named in the Test squad and will share the new ball with Stuart Broad. Chris Woakes will assist the duo.

A first-again Olly Stone has been recalled to the Test side for the one-off Test while Lewis Gregory has earned his maiden call-up.

Jack Leach is the sole specialist spinner in the squad. Sam Curran is also a part of the team and will have a chance to impress selectors before the squad for Ashes is named.

Englan and Ireland play a historic four-day Test at Lord’s Cricket Grund from July 24. This will be the third Test for Ireland, who had made their Test debut against Pakistan last year.

It will just be the second four-day Test in this century. Zimbabwe and South Africa had played a four-day Test in 2017. Although it ended on the second day with South Africa crushing the visitors by an innings and 120 runs.
