AUS vs ENG, 1st ODI: Twitter Reaction: Jason Roy's 180 Powers England To A Win At MCG

When Aaron Finch’s century had propelled Australia to a massive 304 for 8 in the first One-Day Internationals, many would have thought that England’s miseries Down Under would only extend. The apprehensions would have only increased when they lost two wickets quickly. However, since then it was only a one-way traffic as Jason Roy’s career-best record-breaking century powered England to their first win in Australia on the ongoing tour.

Chasing 305, England were off to a blistering start, racing away to fifty off just 4.2 overs but lost two quick wickets in the form of Jonny Bairstow and Alex Hales.  But Australia could not capitalize on the early breakthroughs as Roy and Test skipper Joe Root sent them on a leather hunt with a 221 run-stand. Roy reached his fifty off just 32 balls and was ably supported by Root who looked more than happy to play the role of second fiddle.

With Roy not taking his foot off the pedal, England reached 100 inside 15 overs. Root also completed his fifty off 59 deliveries.  Roy, who was dropped from the side for a string of poor performances last year, soon reached his fourth ODI ton off 92 balls, keeping England in the hunt to chase down the big total. The opening batsman was in the mood to slow down as even after reaching the three-digit mark; he was slamming the Australian bowlers into all parts of the ground to break a plethora of records.

But just when it seemed Roy might cross the 200-run mark, he miscued a short delivery from Mitchell Starc to depart for a monumental 180. The 180-run knock is now the highest by an Englishman in ODIs, bettering the previous best of 171 scored by Alex Hales. The knock is also the second highest against Australia and the highest individual score at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

There were some nervous moments after Roy’s departure as Eoin Morgan departed early and Jos Buttler struggling to get going, but Root remained till the end, scoring 91 to guide England to an impressive 5-wicket victory.

Earlier in the day, Aaron Finch scored his ninth one-day international century, scoring 107 to help Australia post a massive 304. The opening batsman combined with Mitch Marsh (50) for a 118-run partnership before Marcus Stoinis scored a quickfire fifty to propel his side to a big total.
