Recently retired South African batsman Jean-Paul Duminy scripted history and smashed five sixes in seven balls of leg-spinner Eddie Leie as he ended up conceding 37 runs in a single over, the 2nd most in List A cricket. 37 runs came in the over which came via five sixes, a no-ball that went for a four and a two which is the 2nd most to the 39 runs that Bangladesh bowler Alauddin Babu who conceded 39 runs in a one day match in Dhaka in 2013.
The southpaw was batting for the Cape Cobras at the Newlands in Cape Town and hit four consecutive sixes when 32 runs were required. He struck the sixes of the bowling of Leie’s 7th over. He however just conceded a couple of runs in the 5th delivery, and the next ball should have been the final ball of the over but ended up bowling a no-ball, and the southpaw again struck the 7th delivery for a six to collect 37 runs from the over and with that the victory.
The analysis for the over read 6-6-6-6-2-5nb-6.
“It is not every day you get the opportunity, so of course I was trying to go for the six sixes in an over,” Duminy, who finished unbeaten on 70 off just 37 balls, said.
“I initially thought it was all about the bonus point. I looked up at the scoreboard and we needed 35 with four overs still to go to get the bonus point, so I just decided to take Eddie on.
“I was striking the ball really cleanly, and when the first two went for six, I figured I might as well give it a full go now because regardless whether I get out we would still have secured the bonus point. It was enjoyable.”
Leie ended up finishing with figures of 1/90 in 7 overs which is the worst in Knights history and the 37 runs scored by Duminy is the most by a South African going past the record of Herschelle Gibbs when he struck 6 sixes in an over in a 2007 World Cup against the Netherlands.
