Cricket Australia’s official website- cricket.com.au- has revealed two full letters in a book titled- Cricket The Aussie Way!; one that Australian head coach Justin Langer wrote to Sir Donald Bradman in 1994 and the legend’s swift reply to the southpaw.

Cricket The Aussie Way is a book based on former Australian opener and the current head coach, Justin Langer’s life advice to junior cricketers based on his own experiences.

The Australian southpaw had reached out to the legendary Sir Donald Bradman, seeking his advice on how to counter medium pacers during the early part of his career besides asking one of the greatest-ever to play this beautiful game on how he mentally prepared himself in his playing days.

“Dear Sir Don. I feel a little shy about writing this letter but I felt that you may be able to offer me a little advice which may help me achieve my goal of becoming a very successful Australian Test cricketer. As I am predominantly a back-foot player I wonder if you have any ideas on playing medium-pace bowlers,” Justin Langer wrote.

And, within a day of having received the letter, the legendary Sir Donald Bradman typed a reply in which he wrote-

“You flatter me by suggesting that an old octogenarian like me can help with your cricket.”

Bradman then referred Justin Langer to his book ‘The Art of Cricket’, adding that his success was largely due to his natural ability besides his impeccable fitness regime.

“I did not take any measures … other than live a normal and sensible non-smoking and non-drinking career,” he wrote.

Justin Langer recently opened up about the response he got from Sir Don Bradman on 6PR, where he said-

“It was amazing. Not only did he write back in two days, the first line of his letter was ‘I’m flattered that you believe and octogenarian like myself can help you with your cricket’, so there’s humility in itself.”
