Australia’s fast bowler Kane Richardson remarked the match against New Zealand at the Eden Park in Auckland has been one of the ‘great’ games.

The Kangaroos created history as they chased the highest-ever Twenty20 International run-chase against the Black Caps on Friday (February 16).

Batting first. New Zealand posted 243 for six in their quota of 20 overs courtesy their opener Martin Guptill who completed his second T20I century.

Australia played their first T20 match at the Eden Park since the inaugural T20 International match 13 years ago.

New Zealand won the toss and decided to bat first and made complete use of the conditions as their opening batsmen were involved in a 132 runs opening wicket partnership. Colin Munro and Martin Guptill went after Australian fast bowlers early on.

Kane Richardson was the pick of the bowlers as he picked up two wickets in his four overs.

Australian openers David Warner and D’Arcy Short were involved in a 121 runs partnership before Warner fell in the ninth over. Warner scored his first score of over 50 for the first time in the limited overs format this season.

Glen Maxwell and Aaron Finch then came in and played quickfire innings of 31 and 36 respectively of just 14 deliveries. Australia chased down the target in just 18.5 overs.

Richardson said, “(In) one-day cricket, the occasional 350 vs 350 is tough work but that’s something else. Twelve an over for the whole game, two a ball for the whole game. To do it with seven balls to spare, that’s an amazing effort, it was one of the great games.”

“At the halfway break, everyone thought we were a chance. You think ‘yeah, if someone gets going, we are (a chance). But to do that over 20 overs – and you saw how Guptill played – to stay in that for 20 overs is so hard,” Richardson asserts.

Man of the match D’Arcy Short also expressed his joy after winning the match. Short scored a 44 ball 76 to guide his team to victory.

Short said, “We always believed that we could do it. But when we walked in at half-time and knew we were chasing 240, we knew that we had to go from the start. We had enough firepower to do it if we came off. I think there’s always doubt but we have enough firepower to keep going and we knew if we came off, we’d be all right.”
