On Saturday, the challenge of batting in the windy conditions of Basin Reserve in Wellington was laid bare in front of the whole world. India and New Zealand are playing the first Test match of their two-match series at a venue where the batsmen usually find things tough due to the windy conditions.

That even led to a hilarious incident on Day 1 (Friday) of the first Test, involving New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson.

In the 46th over of India’s innings, during Tim Southee’s over Williamson’s cap blew away due to prevailing winds and the Kiwis skipper had to chase his cap like he chases a ball to the boundary ropes.

Not kidding, the cap really did blow along with the wind as far as the boundary ropes and this whole bemusing incident got caught on the camera too.

The fact that Williamson’s cap raced down from the 30 yards to the boundary ropes clearly depicts the excessive windy conditions in Wellington that makes batting a daunting task for any batsman at the Basin Reserve.

Meanwhile, earlier on Day 1, the New Zealand skipper won the toss and asked India to bat first. Virat Kohli’s team struggled emphatically and were reduced to 122-5 at stumps on the first day.

On Saturday, the onus was on Ajinkya Rahane and Rishabh Pant to keep India in the game, but eventually, India were folded for a paltry 165 runs courtesy of Southee’s four-wicket haul.

New Zealand came out on top on Day 2 and scored 216 runs at the loss of five wickets at stumps. They currently lead team India by 51 runs, and the visitors would hope to wrap up the hosts’ innings early on Day 3 to remain in the contest, otherwise, the Black Caps will run away with it.

The first Test will be followed by a second game that begins from February 29 at Christchurch.
