Kapil Dev Points Out Parents' Wanting Their Kids To Play IPL Instead Of International Cricket

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has undeniably become one of the greatest platforms and the biggest stage for aspiring cricketers. It can be one of the stepping stones for an athlete to burst into the frame for the national side. Nevertheless, former Indian captain, Kapil Dev has raised a grievance about today’s parents wanting their kids to play IPL instead of international cricket.

The IPL has become one of the most significant stages since not only it boasts of a mass fan following due to the presence of foreign stars but also presents money-making opportunities. The connection with Bollywood induces the bulk of popularity along with the thrill of the T20 format. While the cash-rich league stands out in terms of popularity, domestic cricket is primarily the way by which the player’s potential is measured for the rigours of international cricket.
However, Kapil Dev has pointed out that most parents’ want their children chasing for IPL glory and money. Ever since its inception in 2008, the extravaganza has become the top-notch T20 cricket league which paved the way for other countries to form their tournaments too. Even some players have missed their international commitments and opted to ply their trade in the competition. Mainly West Indian players have fallen into such category in need of hefty amounts.
“I get zapped sometimes” : Kapil Dev
In an exclusive chat with Indranil Basu and Shanivi Sadana for Sportskeeda, Kapil Dev stated that when parents give priority to IPL more than international cricket, everything changes. The World Cup-winning captain gets irked when he is asked if their children can play in the lucrative league instead of featuring for India.
“Today parents want their kid to go and play in the IPL. When the parents’ thought process changes, then everything changes. So many people come to me, and they are not bothered if their kid plays for India. Can he play IPL? I get zapped sometimes, but the parents’ job is that they can make a life out of it (IPL),” the Haryana Hurricane stated.
