Aakash Chopra, former Indian opener-turned commentator, feels that Kings XI Punjab skipper KL Rahul could be an ideal successor to Indian skipper Virat Kohli as far as the captaincy of the Indian Cricket Team is concerned.

With former captain Ravichandran Ashwin getting traded to Delhi Capitals, KL Rahul was appointed as the leader of the Kings XI Punjab franchise ahead of the 2020 auctions last year.

The stylish Karnataka batsman will be making his captaincy debut in the upcoming season and Chopra reckoned that it will give everyone a fair idea of Rahul’s leadership and tactical skills.

”I have hope that his captaincy will be good. Actually, we will get an idea of his captaincy, how he runs the game, what strategies he uses. If we see Kohli and Rohit, they are of the same age bracket and at one time you may feel that they are not captain material anymore,” Aakash Chopra said in response to a fan’s question on his official Facebook page.

Indian cricket has always groomed its next leader under the tutelage of the former. While MS Dhoni was groomed by the likes of Rahul Dravid and Anil Kumble, Dhoni did the same with Virat Kohli.

Aakash Chopra reckoned that just like with captains in the past, a time will come when Virat Kohli will have to pass the baton to someone else. Whether it is KL Rahul or not, no one knows. But according to the former opener, the upcoming IPL will give us a fair indication of what Rahul be like as a captain.

“As they say, a time comes when you have to pass on the baton like MS Dhoni did to Kohli and Kohli will also have to do to someone at some point. When he does that, it is possible that Rahul will be next in line,” Chopra said.

“So, this IPL will show us how KL Rahul will be like a captain but I feel, the manner in which I have seen him play and his temperament, I feel he will be a good captain.” he added.
