India’s Test opener, KL Rahul has admitted he is ready to fill in Wriddhiman Saha‘s shoes, who is likely to miss the One-off Test fixture against Afghanistan starting on June 14 at Bengaluru.

Meanwhile, Saha remains unsure of his participation after sustaining a thumb injury. Unfortunately, he suffered an injury in Qualifier second against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the recently-concluded Indian Premier League (IPL). As a result, he also missed the summit clash against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at Wankhede on May 27.

Rahul, however, did a good job for the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) behind the stumps during the IPL campaign. Apart from keeping, he finished as the third highest scorer in the tournament with 659 runs.

Although Punjab struggled to qualify, Rahul impressed everybody with fierce hitting.

Moreover, he scored runs at an average of 54.91, including six fifties in 14 innings. He also registered the fastest fifty in the history of the T20 league.

I am open to the challenge: Rahul

The Karnataka-based batsman Rahul admitted he is training hard and is ready to take up the dual responsibility. He also revealed that he is ready to step up whenever the team demands.

I am always open to the challenge of dual responsibility. I have been training hard and will take up the role if the team demands the same,” IANS quoted Rahul as saying.

When quizzed about the new role in the cash-rich league, Rahul mentioned this is not the first time he has kept wickets.

Admitting that it can take a toll on the body, KL Rahul further said that you have to be ready to support your team.

This wasn’t the first time that I took on a dual responsibility. I knew it will be hard on the body, as I don’t keep regularly through the year but that’s what you do seeing the demand of the team,” he added.

I took it up as a challenge and worked on keeping. It’s a team sport and you have to be ready to take up the role that the team wants,” he concluded.
