Mayank Agarwal has now pretty much sealed his spot in India’s playing XI with a superb double century against South Africa in the ongoing first Test. The right-handed batsman made his debut in Australia last year and made an immediate impact on the historic tour. He scored two fifties in Australia before registering another on the tour of West Indies.

And he finally reached the triple-digit mark on Thursday. Starting day two on 84, Mayank Agarwal reached his hundred. He shared a mammoth 317-run stand with Rohit Sharma as the pair became only the third in Indian cricket history to add 300 or more for the opening wicket of a Test innings. Rohit was out after scoring 176 but Mayank Agarwal went on to score a fine double ton.

Agarwal became the first Indian to score a double century in Tests since Virat Kohli’s twin double centuries. And soon after the knock, his good friend and out-of-favour India opener KL Rahul took to Twitter to laud him. Rahul, who is currently plying his trade in the Vijay Hazare Trophy for Karnataka, congratulated Agarwal and said that this is just the beginning as he wrote:

“Congratulations my brother, so proud of you… this is just the beginning @mayankcricket♥️”

Talking about the game, India are in cruise control. The Virat Kohli-led side is looking set to win the game. Centuries from Mayank Agarwal and Rohit saw India declare their innings on a huge total of 502 for 7. The bowlers then joined the party by reducing the beleaguered Proteas to 39 for 3. Ravichandran Ashwin picked up two wickets while Ravindra Jadeja picked up 1.

Dean Elgar and Temba Bavuma batting on 27 and 2 runs respectively will start the proceedings with the bat on day three. South Africa trail India’s first innings total by 463 runs.
