LPL 2020: Kyle Abbott Signs Up With Jaffna Stallions For The Inaugural Edition

Former South Africa seamer Kyle Abbott would be part of the inaugural edition of Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2020. The 2020 edition of LPL, which was supposed to begin on the 13th of November, got postponed to the 27th, following the approval of the Sri Lankan government after discussions with the health authorities. Kyle Abbott has penned a deal with Jaffna Stallions.

Kyle Abbott is the fourth South African player to be part of LPL 2020 after David Miller, Faf Du Plessis and Colin Ingram. Nevertheless, it is worth noting that all three aforementioned names have pulled out of the tournament. David Miller and Faf Du Plessis will play in the upcoming limited-overs leg at home against England. On the other hand, Hobart Hurricanes roped in Colin Ingram for the 2020 Big Bash League, forcing him to opt out.

Kyle Abbott, who joined Jaffna Stallions with Ravi Bopara, has 60 South African caps to his name. The right-arm speedster played 11 Tests, 28 ODIs, and 21 T20Is, picking up 99 wickets in total. He was part of Proteas’ squad that reached the semi-final of the 2015 World Cup and suffered a heartbreaking defeat in the semi-final to New Zealand. The veteran seamer has featured in 153 T20s, picking up 155 scalps at 28.36.

Abbott last played for the national team in 2017 before ending his career to take up a Kolpak contract. The Natal-born represented Worcestershire, Middlesex and Hampshire in English county cricket. In the Indian Premier League, he was part of Kings XI Punjab, Chennai Super Kings, and Pune Warriors, and Durban Heat in the Mzansi Super League.
