It has been a breakthrough year for Mayank Agarwal in international cricket. Ever since he made his Test debut in Australia, the young opener showed grit and determination to finish as the highest run-scorer for India in the longest format of the game. The first year of Agarwal was marked by the confidence which he acquired over the years playing domestic cricket for Karnataka.
Since his debut against Australia in Melbourne on Dec 26, 2018, Mayank Agarwal has played nine Tests and cracked two double-centuries, a century and three fifties to tally 754 runs. He ended the year as the sixth highest run-getter in Test cricket. He also earned an ODI call-up during the World Cup and in the recent series against West Indies but didn’t get a game.

Mayank Agarwal had a dream run in 2019
Agarwal was also in his elements for his state side when he wasn’t playing international cricket. The talented batsman scored runs consistently helping Karnataka bag a double of Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. As Mayank Agarwal embarks on his second year in international cricket, he retrospects on the maiden year calling it a learning curve for him.
“It has been a great learning curve,” Agarwal said to TOI. “There have been some tremendous experiences. To be honest, when I got picked into the Test squad or played my first match, I never ever thought about what I needed to do. I just took it one game at a time, put my head down and gave it my best shot each time, every single day. It feels great to contribute to the team. More importantly, what’s most satisfying is that India are the No. 1 team in the world,” he added.

2019 will remain very close to Mayank Agarwal. From making Test debut to finishing as the highest run-scorer for his country in that format, he has come a long way in this one year. Agarwal has also gone from strength to strength and will hope to keep up the same form when India tour New Zealand. Picking one particular moment from such an eventful year is always tough, but Agarwal rated wearing the India colours was the most prized memory from the year.
“It’s difficult to point out one biggest takeaway. To be able to go out and play in India colours has obviously been special. We’ve had some great wins and I carry those memories with me. I’ve really enjoyed my year as an international cricketer,” Agarwal concluded.
