Member Of 1954 Ranji-Winning Tamil Nadu Team, M G Bavanarayanan Passes Away
Tamil Nadu's Maiden Ranji Trophy Team Winning Member Bavanarayanan Passes Away.

M G Bavanarayanan, who was part of the Tamil Nadu team which won its maiden Ranji Trophy title in 1954-55, passed away on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, he was 90-years-old and left his wife, three sons, and a daughter. Bava, as he was known in cricket circles, played five Ranji Trophy games. Furthermore, he was a state selector when Tamil Nadu regained the title in the 1987-88 season. M G Bhavanaryan also served as a match referee in TNCA first division league.

He also represented Madras against Ceylon in the M J Gopalan Trophy fixture in 1953, top-scoring with 71 in the first innings.

A middle-order batsman, seam bowler and an athletic fielder, Bavanarayanan turned out for many clubs in the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) league. However, his longest association was with the Madras Port Trust where he worked.

The TNCA condoled Bavanarayanan’s demise, recalling his contribution to the development of the game, particularly in the districts.

Bavanarayanan served in various capacities for the improvement and development of the game in the City and Districts, particularly in the Kancheepuram District Cricket Association,” TNCA stated.

Former India international, V.V Kumar shared high praise of M G Bhavanarayanan. He also lauded his all-round abilities on the cricket field.

Bava was an accurate medium pacer who could exploit a batsman’s weakness. As a batsman, he was very defensive but had the ability to play strokes later on in his innings. He could bat through tough situations for Tamil Nadu and Port Trust, in the TNCA first division league. And he was one of the best cover fielders of our generations,” Kumar concluded.
