Former England skipper Michael Vaughan, on Thursday (May 3), hailed Surrey’s signing of Indian superstar Virat Kohli. The India skipper signed up for the county outfit in order to prepare himself for the upcoming tough tour of England.

Kohli will ply his trade for all the forms of cricket throughout the month of June until the close of Surrey’s away game against Yorkshire.

Kohli, who has scored heavily in Australia and South Africa had endured a tough time when India toured England in 2014. India had lost the 3-1 and Kohli was one of the worst performers. He averaged just 13.40 in ten innings with a top score of 39.

The 29-year old Kohli, however, has completely transformed as a batsman since that disastrous tour. The reigning ICC Player of the Year averages more than 50 across formats of the game. At just 29, he has scored 56 international centuries with 6 of them being double tons.

Meanwhile, the news drew mixed reactions from the cricketing fraternity. Many believe that Kohli will enhance the reputation of county cricket.  On the other hand, many feel that Virat Kohli should not have been allowed for the stint keeping in mind the England tour.

Recently, former England pacer Bob Willis had slammed the possibility of Kohli playing county cricket.

“I can’t stand overseas players in county cricket” he had told Sky Sports.

“The only way to improve our Test is to have as many England-qualified players playing in the County Championship as possible. Instead, they are going to pay Kohli, presumably, five figures a match so he can hone his skills in English conditions before a Test series. It’s a nonsense,” he had added.

However, Vaughan is one of the many who are hailing the singing. Welcoming Kohli, he tweeted:

“Welcome to County Cricket @imVkohli … Without doubt Scarborough will be awaiting you with a lovely Bag of Fish & Chips … Great signing @surreycricket ???”
