Ishan Porel’s magical spell against Pakistan in the semifinal match has earned him accolades all over the world. India rode on Shubman Gill’s unbeaten 102 followed by Porel’s four for 17 to beat Pakistan by a massive margin of 203 runs. India will play for the World Cup trophy against Australia on February 3.
Ishan’s childhood coach, Bhibhas Das recently revealed that though Porel was upset for not being picked by any team in the auctions, he was left eager to prove his worth in the ground.
“I have been regularly in touch with him over the phone during the ongoing World Cup in New Zealand. Bittu (Ishan’s nickname) was very hopeful to get to play in the IPL. But after the auction got over and he remained unsold, Bittu was very upset,” Das told to Sportswallah.
“I told Bittu that cricket is not all about IPL. I personally am not a big admirer of T20 cricket. I advised him to prove himself on the field. Bittu also told me that he was feeling more hungry for success as he had one or two points to prove,” Das added further.
Ishan started his career in National Sporting Club at Chandannagar under the guidance of Prabir Mondal. However, he was brought to Kolkata by Anup Samaddar and got admitted to Bibhas’ Academy at Deshbandhu Park.
“Bittu was only ten years old then. He was very lean. But I was very impressed to see him bowl at the nets the very first day. I told Anup Samaddar, a senior cricketer of Bengal, that this boy will make it big. You see, I was right then,” said Bibhas.
Ishan was a lean guy, and Bibhas had to concentrate more on his fitness levels. Bibhas made special training and diet charts for Ishan, and the results were evident.
“Bittu was no longer a feeble boy. He became strong. He added more pace in his bowling. I changed his bowling action too. He previously didn’t bowl open chested, neither was his action was side on. It was a mixed kind of bowling action that he used to bowl with. I made it open chested. It gives him more control over the line and length,” stated Bibhas.
Impressed by his performance in Wari, Ishan was roped in by East Bengal, top notch club in Bengal. At the same time, he was picked to play for Under-19 Bengal.
“He came to the ground by travelling in a train. He had to start very early in the morning from his residence at Chandannagar. I told him to stay at my house at Shovabazar in North Kolkata during the match days,” recalled Bibhas.
Bibhas also dreamt of becoming a cricketer, but a car accident ruined his dream. Now Bibhas wants to fulfil his dream through the success of his boy, Ishan.
“Bittu is very matured in his way of thinking. He knows everything could be over if they lost the World Cup Final to Australia. Bittu promised me to bring the Trophy from New Zealand. And that will be my dream come true moment,” concluded Bibhas.
