Mohammad Irfan Rewrites History With Unbelievable Spell in Caribbean Premier League

Pakistan fast-bowler Mohammad Irfan has entered the record books after producing the most economical four-over spell in T20 history for Barbados Tridents in the Caribbean Premier League.

At a time when bowlers are almost clueless as to how to stop the batsmen in a format which is nothing less than a curse for them, Irfan has shown the way with a historic spell. The left-arm pacer produced one of the finest spells in the history of the shortest format of the game. Playing for Barbados Tridents against St Kitts and Nevis Patriots took two wickets and conceded just one run from his four overs.

Incredibly, he bowled 23 dot balls before leaking a single on the very last ball of his spell. He finished with scarcely-believable figures of 4-3-1-2.

He broke the record set by South Africa quick Chris Morris and Sri Lanka’s Chanaka Welegedara. Both of them had conceded 2 runs off their four overs in their domestic T20 competitions.

Irfan took the key wicket of Chris Gayle with the first ball of the innings. In his second over, he accounted for Gayle’s opening partner Evin Lewis. Overall, the tall pacer beat the bat an incredible 17 times and drew one edge.

Brandon King and Devon Thomas had absolutely no clue whatsoever on how to deal with the Pakistan star. The end of Irfan’s spell brought relief for the duo as they recovered to put on 88 runs for the third wicket – including 27 runs from one Steve Smith over, which included four sixes.

They added 59 runs in the space of 15 deliveries as King reached his maiden CPL half-century from 42 deliveries, while Thomas struck 32 (29). Ben Cutting then slammed 29 not out off 21 to take his side home with seven balls to spare.

Earlier in the game, Barbados Tridents rode on Jason Holder’s fifty to score a modest 147 for 6.
