Former India cricketer, Mohammad Kaif is highly disappointed by India’s fielding in the limited-overs matches against Australia. The Indian team dropped plenty of catches and leaked runs while misfielding throughout the course of the six matches comprised of ODI and T20 series.

Even the captain and an excellent fielder, Virat Kohli dropped sitters in the field. Buttery fingers while catching and ground fielding cost plenty of runs to the Indians. Right from the first ODI, where Steve Smith was dropped twice – and he went on to score a match-winning hundred – to the last T20I where the fielders also gave Glenn Maxwell a couple of lives, India was unimpressive.

Fielders should be reprimanded for dropping catches: Mohammad Kaif

While India may have won the T20I series, however, Kaif pointed out that there were several dropped chances and sloppiness in the field which shouldn’t go unnoticed. Kaif, who is renowned as one of the best fielders, opined that India could not let this kind of slip-ups happen in big matches in the T20 World Cup which is slated for next year.

Speaking to the broadcaster, Sony Networks, Mohammad Kaif said, “So many dropped catches and misfields cannot be part of the game. They are doing it too much. If India has to win the World Cup, which is going to happen in October in India, then if the fielding is like this, then you will lose the big matches.”

The 40-year-old remembers his playing days when the bowlers, especially pacers, used to reprimand fielders for misfielding. Mohammad Kaif observed that the bowlers in the current Indian setup are young and don’t want to say anything to the guilty fielder.

Mohammad Kaif advises the team to put in extra hours to better their fielding as an important four-match Test series is forthcoming, and any spilt catch could prove to be vital in deciding the outcome. The Border-Gavaskar Trophy commences on 17th December with a pink-ball day-night Test match in Adelaide.

“This Indian team has young bowlers, so when the catch is dropped the poor guys go back to the run-up. The bowler does not say anything but thinks it is part of the game. But it is not.

“If we had dropped a catch of Ajit Agarkar, Srinath, or Zaheer Khan’s bowling, then even if they stare at the fielder, then you need to practice for extra two hours the next day,” Mohammad Kaif added.
