Former Windies skipper Darren Sammy remains one of the very few captains to have the honour of leading his team to two World Cup titles as a skipper. Despite not being a prolific run scorer for his team, Sammy’s inspiring captaincy played a pivotal role in West Indies winning the World Twenty20 titles twice. Once in the year 2012 while the very recent being in 2016 when the Caribbeans riding on four sixes of 4 consecutive balls by Carlos Brathwaite in the final over of the match registered an exceptional come from behind victory to clinch their 2nd World Twenty20 title.
Following the victory, Sammy in the post-match presentation ceremony became very emotional and revealed that the team didn’t even have their jerseys in Kolkata ahead of the start of the tournament. He criticised the board for not supporting them and gave due credit to the coach and the support staffs for making sure that they got their jerseys in time and could compete in the mega event.

The relationship between the Windies board and some of the top Windies cricketers hasn’t been great in the recent past. There have been several pay disputes between the players and the board which has forced them to name 2nd string teams for several tours. The trend also gave rise to some good players who went on to serve Windies for the coming years.
Following West Indies’ victory in the 2016 World Twenty20, Sammy was sacked as the captain of the T20I team and was replaced by Carlos Brathwaite. Sammy didn’t get his due credit and deserves a round of applause. Maybe this is the shortest format but a World Cup win is a World Cup win, and any world-cup winning captain must be given their due credit.

Sharing a picture of Sammy with two World T20 trophies, Nabi wrote, “Happy birthday champion @darensammy88”
