Someone’s loss is someone’s gain. Perhaps, this is the line, which perfectly suits the young Mominul Haque of Bangladesh Cricket Team. The flamboyant batsman was named as the skipper of the Test team of Bangladesh with Shakib Al Hasan being out from the series due to ban. Thus, Mominul Haque will become the first captain to lead Bangladesh in their first-ever Day/night Test match.

With Shakib Al Hasan suspended, Bangladesh have turned to the 28-year-old Mominul Haque to lead the Test side, whose first assignment will be the two-match series against India. According to Mominul, he isn’t really sure what the selectors saw in him, especially with many senior players in the squad.

I was never ready – Mominul Haque

However as surprised as he may be, Mominul is not worried and in fact, he is looking forward to continuing playing his own game en route making history as the first captain of Bangladesh in a Day/Night Test.

The newly-appointed Test skipper said he was not aware why he was chosen for the role when the team has experienced seniors like Mahmudullah and Mushfiqur Rahim. Mominul now plans to play his natural game as he used to do earlier.

“I was never ready and it was totally unexpected. Never thought that I would be captain of the Bangladesh team, the Test team. But however, I have got it, Alhamdulillah. I never thought captaincy is any kind of extra pressure or responsibility because if I think that way then certainly it will be extra pressure. The way I’ve played before to score runs and play for the team, I am trying to play like that,” he said.

“If I worry too much (about captaincy) it will affect me. If I think I have a lot of responsibilities as the captain and I have to pull the team forward then certainly it will create some pressure. And if I play as if I have to make runs for the team just as a batsman then probably it would not have the same effect,” Mominul expressed.

On Day/Night Test:

Further, the flamboyant batsman quoted that he is pretty happy to lead the team in the country’s first-ever Day/night Test. It is slated to be held at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata from November 22.

“I think it is a great opportunity. We have not played a Test under floodlights or with a pink ball before, so we think this is a good opportunity for us. If we can play good cricket, it will be great,” said the new skipper.

Well, Bangladesh already yielded results by appointing Mahmudullah Riyad as the skipper in the shorter format. They would hope to see a similar result with new skipper in Test format as well.
