MS Dhoni Advised Me To Stay Away From Social Media As Much As Possible: Shreyas Iyer
Young Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer has revealed MS Dhoni advised him to stay away from all sorts of media platforms in order to stay focused.
The boom of social media has brought the cricketers and their fans closer than ever. The fans now remain totally updated about their favourite cricketer’s life. The cricketers also seem to enjoy the closeness as they constantly post photos and write messages in order to bridge the gap between them and their fans.
But while the social media has been a boon so far, there is no denying that it can also have some adverse effects on the players. Any small mistakes of theirs is dealt severely as the fans nowadays do not refrain from giving the players a piece of their mind. Not only that, sometimes a young player could also lose focus which can inflict irreparable damage on his career.
And so when Iyer walked into the Indian team, he received some words of wisdom from none other than MS Dhoni. The former India skipper advised Iyer to stay away from social media as well as newspapers.
Speaking at a talk-show, Shreyas talked about the advices he has received from his dear ones after entering the world of cricket.
“After I joined the Indian cricket team, MS Dhoni advised me that I need to avoid reading the newspapers and should try to stay away from social media as much as possible,” the 23-year-old right-hander from Mumbai said.
“Social media has become a big part of our lives and I try to manage it well but it’s the criticism that motivates me and keeps me going,” he added.
Adding further on how he handled the attention he receives from his fans, Shreyas recalled how a girl’s behaviour changed soon after he bagged an Indian Premier League deal.
“Soon after the auction news was out, this girl whom I knew started messaging me. On confronting her as to why she is desperately trying to reach out, I got to know that she was doing so because she was happy for me.
“That’s when I understood that rather than getting to know me, she was behind the money,” he revealed.
Iyer has so far played 6 ODIs and as many T20Is. He recently led India A to the win in the one-day tri-series in England involving the hosts and West Indies.
