The inception of IPL saw a lot of star players being included in their home franchise as icon players. Sourav Ganguly was named for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) while Sachin Tendulkar was the obvious choice for Mumbai Indians. But former India captain MS Dhoni was without a home ahead of the inaugural edition of IPL.

However, MS Dhoni was not the first choice as captain for CSK, but the decision turned out to be a blessing in disguise for the franchise. Former CSK member S Badrinath, in his YouTube channel, said that Dhoni was not the first option as the CSK management wanted Virender Sehwag to led their side.

“IPL started in 2008, and if you see who was the first option for Chennai Super Kings, it was Virender Sehwag,” Badrinath said.

“The management had decided on picking Sehwag for sure, but Sehwag himself said that he was brought up in Delhi, so he would have a better connection.

Sehwag was picked up by his home team Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) in the inaugural edition. Dhoni however has been a success story for CSK. He has led them to three IPL titles and has been the mastermind for all the success and tough times the franchise has endured over the years.
