Hopes were sky high from MS Dhoni when he walked out to bat in the second ODI against Australia on Tuesday in Nagpur. Before his latest outing, Dhoni had played four ODIs against Australia this year and had scored fifties in all of them including the first game of this series. In the series-opener, Dhoni had played an unbeaten knock of 59 to help India recover from 99 for 4 and chase down 237 to win the game by seven wickets.

Dhoni’s record in Nagpur is also stunning.  Prior to his latest knock, Dhoni had played five ODIs in Nagpur, scoring a staggering 268 runs at an impressive average of 134 including two tons. One of those tons came against Australia in 2009. Dhoni is also the top run-getter at the venue. No surprises then that the fans expected a lot from him when he joined skipper Virat Kohli in the middle with the team reeling at 171 for 5. However, the former India skipper fared poorly and was out for a golden duck. He wanted to drive an Adam Zampa delivery through the covers but ended up edging to Usman Khawaja in the slip cordon.

This was the fifth golden duck for MS Dhoni, who has now appeared in 337 ODIs for India in his glorious career. The last time he had recorded the embarrassing score was in Visakhapatnam against the same opposition way back in 2010.

Dhoni had recorded his first golden duck in his debut match against Bangladesh in Chittagong in 2004. His other four golden ducks have come twice against Sri Lanka and twice against Australia.

Here is a list showing MS Dhoni’s golden ducks in ODIs:

vs Ban, Chittagong, 2004
vs SL, Ahmedabad, 2005
vs SL, Port of Spain, 2007
vs Aus, Vizag, 2010
vs Aus, Nagpur, 2019

Overall, the legendary batsman has ducks to his name in ODIs. Among Indians, Dhoni is now the 16th batsman to register 10 or more ducks. The list is headed by Sachin Tendulkar (20 ducks) while the likes of Yuvraj Singh, Sourav Ganguly, Suresh Raina, Rahul Dravid, Kapil Dev and Virat Kohli have also recorded more than 10 ducks.

Meanwhile, Kohli scored his 40th ODI ton as India overcame batting collapses to post a challenging total of 250. India are leading the series 1-0.
