IPL 2020 will get underway on September 19 with defending champions Mumbai Indians taking on arch-rivals Chennai Super Kings (CSK). MS Dhoni will hog the limelight as the former Indian captain will play his first cricket match since the 2019 World Cup. Former KKR captain Gautam Gambhir believes Dhoni will find it difficult to make a quick impact.

Gambhir, who led KKR to two IPL triumphs, said that the Dhoni will have a crucial role to play as CSK captain in absence of Suresh Raina and Harbhajan Singh. Gambhir is also skeptic about how Dhoni will perform as a captain since he has not been involved in cricket since over a year now.

“Firstly, every captain’s role is important for their franchise. But MS Dhoni’s becomes more important because they don’t have Suresh Raina and Harbhajan Singh, two players from their playing XI who had experience,” Gautam Gambhir said on Star Sports’ show Game Plan.

“I would want to see at what number MS Dhoni bats because the better you bat, the better decisions you can take as a captain. So his form is going to be very important and I will want to see him start at No.3 or No.4 so that he can get his form.”

“He has not played cricket at all for the last one year, so to suddenly come to a tournament like the IPL and start scoring runs and make an impact sometimes becomes difficult. So the higher he bats, it would become easier.”
