With less than ten months remaining before the T20 World Cup gets underway in Australia this year, India head coach Ravi Shastri was asked about the team-composition for the marquee event. In a recent interview, Ravi Shastri said that MS Dhoni could return to the Indian team for the T20 World Cup if he gets going in the IPL. The coach also made it clear that IPL would play a big role in deciding the final squad.

But while the IPL could make things easier for the selectors and team-management, it could also make things trickier for them. They would be in a big dilemma if all three – MS Dhoni, Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson – have good IPLs. All the three players, in fact, are consistent performers in the IPL and not many would bet on them having a poor tournament.

Moreover, Pant and Samson continue to be a part of the T20I side although only former is being preferred in the playing eleven for the time being. Well, when Ravi Shastri was asked about the same, he did not come up with a clear cut name and said that if all three do well in the IPL, the selection will be done taking into account multiple factors, including experience and conditions in the host nation – Australia.

“You’ll have to see who’ll do the job at what number, (and) what role. Whos the best guy, you’ll take experience, youth and flamboyance into account and who fits into that number the best whether it is X, Y or Z.

“And as well be playing it Australia well have to figure out who’ll adapt to the conditions best. All three names that you took are explosive batsmen and will be suitable for batting at number 4 or 5 because we need power at the back.

“So you’ll have to see consistency, experience and conditions. All that will come into play when the selectors sit down to pick the World Cup squad,” he added.

Well, if experience will be taken into account, Sanju Samson can very well wave goodbye to his chances of making it to the squad. He has only played one T20I so far that too way back in 2015. So even if he does well in the IPL, his chances of making it to World Cup looks very bleak.
