MS Dhoni Should Come Back In The Indian Team If He Is Fit And In Form: Gautam Gambhir

MS Dhoni hasn’t played for India for a year now and no one really knows whether we will once again see the former Indian captain in national colours or not. Dhoni last featured for India during their heartbreaking semi-final defeat to New Zealand in the 2019 World Cup.
Post the defeat, MS Dhoni went into a sabbatical, making himself unavailable for every series that India played in the 2019-20 season. Dhoni has had the backing of the team-management with head coach Ravi Shastri repeatedly saying that the former captain can make a comeback to the team for the T20 World Cup provided he has a good IPL campaign.
That all has gone up for smoke as neither the IPL took place on its schedule time nor is the T20 World Cup going to happen this year due to Covid-19. The IPL, however, is all set to take place in the UAE from September 19. But with the T20 World Cup getting postponed till October 2021, will Dhoni make a comeback to the national team for the quadrennial event or will the team-management continue to persist with KL Rahul as wicket-keeper?
‘He can still win the game for the country’- Gautam Gambhir on MS Dhoni
Several former players have voiced their opinions on the Dhoni conundrum. Gautam Gambhir, who has played a lot of cricket with and under Dhoni, feels that the former captain must make a comeback to the national side if he is fit and in good form as he feels that age is just a ‘number’ and Dhoni still has the ability to finish off games for his country.
“Age is just a number. I think if you are in a very good form if you are hitting the ball really well. MS Dhoni, if he is hitting the ball really well, if he is very good form, if he is enjoying the game and if he thinks that he can still win the game for the country at that number – especially at six and seven,” Gautam Gambhir at Star Sports show ‘Cricket Connected’.
“If he is great fitness and form, I think he should keep continuing playing because no one can actually force anyone to retire. A lot of experts can put a lot of pressure on people like MS Dhoni because of their age and stuff but again it’s an individual decision, when you started playing cricket it was your individual decision. When you want to leave it is again your individual decision.” he added.
Meanwhile, MS Dhoni is set to return on the cricket field with the 13th edition of the IPL after a hiatus of almost 14 months.
