Australia’s Glenn Maxwell is one of the most destructive white-ball batsmen today. On his day, he would inflict no mercy on the opposition and go straight after the bowlers and subsequently get into a rhythm. However, Glenn Maxwell is also one batsman, who lacks the temperament and is often done by his own recklessness. And his battle with leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal in the 2017 ODI and T20 series in India tells the same story.

The 2017 limited-overs tour of India was a forgettable one for Australia as they lost the ODI series by 4-1. Although captain Steve Smith fared reasonably well, the tourists needed an in-form Glenn Maxwell to fire to finish the innings well. However, the Victorian managed only 58 runs in three ODIs at 19.33, becoming the victim of Yuzvendra Chahal four occasions, in three ODIs and the first T20I.
The Haryana-born leggie mentioned that he would always bowl outside off-stump and sometimes in the middle, trying to mix it up often as well. Remembering the stumping in the third ODI in Indore, Chahal stated that anticipating Maxwell would let himself loose against him, the bowler and MS Dhoni planned to bowl outside the off-stump.
“I always tried to bowl outside the stumps to Glenn Maxwell. I also tried to keep mix-up my deliveries. I would mostly bowl to him outside the stumps, and sometimes I would bowl to him in the middle. The plan between me and Mahi bhai was to bowl to him outside the stumps. I knew he was about to charge on my bowl, so I bowled this one even further outside the off stump.” Chahal stated in an Instagram session with Mayank Agarwal.
Glenn Maxwell lacked patience in that series: Yuzvendra Chahal
The 25-year-old Indian spinner went on to claim that the swashbuckling batsman was short of patience in that series. Being always attacking mode, MS Dhoni advised Chahal not to show to him of their intention of bowling outside the off-stump that would create chances for them to have him dismissed. Overall, Yuzvendra Chahal has got the wicket of Glenn Maxwell four times in ODIs, twice in T20Is, and thrice in IPL.
“He (Maxwell) was lacking patient in this series. He was always trying to attack on my deliveries, and he would start hitting shots against me. So I spoke to Mahi bhai, what to do. So Mahi bhai said, ‘we will mix-up the deliveries,” Yuzvendra Chahal said.
“We will not show him that we are about to bowl to him outside off-stump, so that it will create chances to get him out. Maxwell kept getting out on my deliveries. I have also dismissed him a few times in the IPL.” Yuzvendra Chahal added.
