It would not be entirely wrong to say that Prithvi Shaw faces a tough task in reclaiming his Tet spot in the Indian team. It looked like he would get a long run with the team when he hit the ground running in international cricketer last year. He scored a century on his Test debut and scored 237 runs in the two-match series against West Indies to bag the Player of the Series award.
But things went only downhill from that point onward. He was a part of the team for the Test series in Australia but could not play any game after injuring his ankle during a warm-up game. Thing then went from bad to worse when he was slapped with a doping ban which ended earlier this month. As soon as the ban ended, he played for Mumbai in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and made an instant impression with an impressive fifty.
Meanwhile, in his absence, India tried out different combinations before settling on Rohit Sharma and Mayank Agarwal for the time being. As of now Shubman Gill is the backup opener while the likes of KL Rahul as well as India A regulars like Abhimanyu Easwaran and Priyank Panchal are also ahead of him in pecking order.

MSK Prasad on Prithvi Shaw:
As Prithvi Shaw is trying to win back his place in the Test team, chief selector MSK Prasad has spoken on his chances. India’s next Test assignment is in February when they will tour New Zealand. And in a promising update for Shaw, Prasad said that the youngster might stake his claim for selection by New Zealand Tests.
“Everyone knows what he is capable of. Unfortunately, he has been out for some time and he is looking in good touch ever since he made his comeback. Let’s see how he progresses and I am sure – by the time the New Zealand series comes up – he will be able to stake his claim for a spot in the side,” he told The Times of India.
Shaw, nonetheless, has been in fine form since returning to action. In four games so far, he has scored 187 runs including two half-centuries.
