Former selection committee chairman Sandeep Patil has slammed the MSK Prasad-led selection committee for meeting out step-motherly behaviour to Ambati Rayudu. Meanwhile, Ambati Rayudu announced his retirement yesterday after snubbed twice from the ICC World Cup squad.

Patil takes a dig at the selectors

Rayudu was in contention for the no four spot in the middle order ahead of the World Cup. But a dismal outing in the IPL for Chennai Super Kings put him behind in the race. All-rounder Vijay Shankar peeped Ambati Rayudu for his ability to contribute to all the departments to be in the flight to England. Moreover, the selectors decided to go with youngsters Rishabh Pant and Mayank Agarwal over Ambati Rayudu after injuries led Shikhar Dhawan and Vijay Shankar ruled out of the World Cup.

Sandeep Patil expressed his grief while speaking about the retirement of Ambati Rayudu. He also lashed out at the selectors for ill-treating Rayudu which is possibly why he decided to bid farewell to cricket.

“This is sad. Step-motherly treatment has been dished out to Rayudu and all this has been handled very badly,” Patil told mid-day, referring to the choice of Vijay Shankar’s replacement.

Furthermore, Sandeep Patil admitted that he had Ambati Rayudu in his World Cup and the selection doesn’t justify the policy of the BCCI. However, he also revealed that he had nothing against Mayank Agarwal and that he is an outstanding batsman.

“Look, Mayank is a good player and we cannot say that there has been any bungling simply because we have reached the semi-finals of the tournament. But somewhere I would say that all this doesn’t do justice to the horses for courses policy. I had Rayudu in my team for the World Cup,” Patil added.

Sandeep Patil enjoys a very old bond with Ambati Rayudu. He had coached him during the India A days to be the national selector when Rayudu made his international debut in 2013. The former India batsman feels the management had no role in keeping the veteran batsman out.

“I beg to differ. I believe that only the selectors have messed things up,” he concluded.
