Beximco Dhaka captain Mushfiqur Rahim has been fined 25 per cent of the match after losing his cool and almost hitting his teammate Nasum Ahmed in a Bangabandhu T20 Cup encounter against Fortune Barishal on Monday. The veteran cricketer faced heavy criticism after his disgraceful behaviour on the field as the video of the incident went viral.
The incident took place on the final ball of the 17th over when Fortune Barishal were involved in a tight chase. On the final ball of the over, a well set Afif Hossain tried to make some room for himself while facing Shafiqul Islam. However, the left-arm pacer smartly changed his line and the batsman could only miscue his shot behind the stumps.
It was clearly Nasum’s catch who was standing at short fine leg. He was shaping for the catch when Mushfiqur Rahim ran around 10 yards from his position and took the catch. But while taking the catch, he bumped into Nasum and lost his cool thereafter.
In a bizarre turn of events, Mushfiqur Rahim almost hit his teammate but eventually decided against it. Mushfiqur Rahim was not done yet and was seen scolding Nasum before the other players intervened to bring the situation under control.
According to the press release, Mushfiqur Rahim has been found guilty of showing insulting gesture towards Nasum Ahmed during the match, which constitutes to a Level 1 (2.6) offense.
In addition to the sanction imposed, one demerit point has been added to his disciplinary record. Notably, four or more demerit points in the tournament, will lead to Rahim’s suspension and he will be banned. Four demerit points equate to a ban from one match.
The breach was reported by on-field umpires Gazi Sohel and Mahfuzur Rahman, 3rd Umpire Masudul Rahman Mukul and 4th Umpire Muzahiduzzaman Swapon and the penalty was imposed by Match Referee ASM Roquibul Hassan. Mushfiqur accepted the sanction and as such no official hearing was required.
