Veteran Bangladesh cricketer Mushfiqur Rahim will captain the Beximco Dhaka side in the Bangabandhu T20 Cup, set to commence on the 23rd of November. The ascendancy to the leadership of the side opened up speculations that Mushfiqur Rahim could don the captain’s hat for Bangladesh too. However, the keeper-batsman has cleared the air, ruling out the possibility of the same.

Mushfiqur Rahim, who is one of the most crucial players for Bangladesh regardless of the format, has captained the national team in all three so far. He has led the side in 23 T20Is, winning eight and losing 14 of them. In One-day international cricket, Mushfiqur has donned the captain’s hat in 37 fixtures, enduring 24 losses and enjoying 11 victories. As far as Tests are concerned, the 32-year old has captained the outfit to seven wins in 34 games and lost 18.

Mushfiqur Rahim does not feel confident about his chances of leading the side and believes that Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has some young players in their mind for the role, which could prove beneficial. At the same time, he expressed his disinterest in captaining the team and backed youngsters to do the job.

“I feel there is no chance of leading the national side. They (BCB) feel that there are some young players and if they are given a chance (captaincy) in the future it can be beneficial for them. In the national team and in the other teams there are a lot of young players and since I’m not interested in leading the national team, I feel they should be given the chance,” Rahim said as quoted by Times Now.

The keeper-batsman is of the view that it is time for the young players to step up and lead the nation. As far as the Bangabandhu T20 Cup goes, Rahim revealed that the franchise saw him the ablest person to guide the side, thereby choosing him for captaincy.

I think the more they (young players) take responsibility the better and it will help them to be more responsible. In this tournament (Bangabandhu T20) the franchise (corporate house) thinks that I am the best person to guide the team and that is why I have taken up captaincy,” he added.
