Navdeep Saini impressed everyone during the second T20I match against Sri Lanka at Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore. With subtle bowling variations of good line and length, he proved why he is considered as one of the best bowling weapons for Team India. Saini might not have played so many games in the shorter format but made his presence count on the pitch when it mattered the most.
Playing only his sixth T20I, Saini bowled at a brisk pace and helped India restrict Sri Lanka at 142/9 in Indore. The 27-year-old pacer ended up with stellar match figures of 2/18, which included as many as 13 dot balls in his quota of four overs at an impressive economy rate of 4.5.
Saini hit the peak performance when he dismissed Danushka Gunathilaka with an absolute gem of an inswinging yorker at 148kmph while he got rid of Bhanuka Rajapaksa with a bouncer. His bowling figures helped India register their first win of this year.
Gautam Gambhir praises Navdeep Saini
Ahead of the third and final T20I which is to be held in Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune, former India opener Gautam Gambhir heaped praise on Saini and added that India skipper Virat Kohli must be feeling like a millionaire with the addition of another prospect in the pace attack.
“The spell that he bowled in Indore in the second T20I against Sri Lanka must have left captain Virat Kohli feeling like a millionaire. Besides Saini, Kohli has Jaspreet Bumrah, Mohammad Shami, Deepak Chahar, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and a revitalised Ishant Sharma to shape his attack. While I don’t like to look too much into the future, India’s fast bowling resources will make them proud,” he added.
It should be noted that even with the likes of Jasprit Bumrah in the side, it was Navdeep Saini who was the most deadly bowler for India as his match-winning bowling figures helped him earn the man of the match award.
“Like a healthy Sensex is indicative of a thriving economy, Navdeep Saini’s form indicates that systems in Indian cricket are robust and productive. His story was devoid of direction and purpose but now his life and bowling has both,” Gambhir wrote in Friday’s Times of India.
