It was around three decades ago when one of the finest Indian wicket-keepers, Nayan Mongia made headlines by smashing a double century in U-19 cricket against Mumbai in the Cooch Behar Trophy. On Tuesday, it was his so Mohit Mongia who broke his father’s record by scoring a sensational 240 of just 246 deliveries against Kerala in the Cooch Bihar Trophy. Nayan had scored 224 which was the highest individual score by a Baroda U-19 batsmen during the trophy until his son broke it today.
The Captain of the Baroda U-19 team, Mohit went past his father’s record to become the highest individual run-getter for the Baroda U-19 team in the Cooch Behar Trophy. He is still unbeaten and will look to smash a triple century.
“I am really happy that my son has broken my record. It’s an incredible feeling. Mohit has been playing well so this double century is very well deserved,” Nayan was quoted as saying by the Times of India.
“Mohit had called up and he sounded very happy about his innings. In fact, he didn’t know that he broke my record. My wife Tanu told him and he was elated. But Tanu is happier as now her son holds a record,” Nayan said jokingly.
Baroda fought back strongly courtesy double century by Mohit and useful half-centuries by Shivalik Sharma and Urvil Patel. Baroda eventually ended the day’s play on 409/7 with Mohit still batting. However, his father feels that Mohit shouldn’t get overawed by just one double century.
“I told him that he shouldn’t be satisfied with just one double century. There is a lot of competition ahead so he has to keep performing,” Nayan said.
When asked if he finds any difference in his and his son’s batting style, Nayan said that his son is a more attacking player who loves to counter-attack the oppositions.
“Yes. Mohit likes to bat in the flow and does counter attack. I used to be a subdued batsman who batted slowly initially before picking up pace later in the innings,” Nayan said.
